Currently, the City of Belleville has an exciting opportunity for two (2) highly motivated and dynamic individuals to join the Recreation, Culture & Community Services Department.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
Reporting directly to the Aquatics Coordinator, this position is responsible for lifeguarding, instructing, organizing and implementing all aquatic programs, including supervision and evaluation of all aquatic programs and staff with the City of Belleville.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Complete administrative tasks as required by the Aquatic Coordinator such as maintaining statistics, completing reports, updating paperwork, updating swim test records, etc
- Ensure that all forms, documents, records and all necessary paperwork are filled out for each shift correctly. Update paperwork and recommend necessary changes to documents/paperwork as required.
- Be responsible for checking that all of the doors are locked after lessons and swims and assist in the maintaining of a clean workplace.
- Assist with shift changes and coverage, ensure staff are following proper protocols, give guidance to other staff members, observe, evaluate and give feedback to aquatic staff, , and assist the Aquatics Coordinator with the performance appraisals of the part-time Aquatics staff.
- Act as a positive role model and assist part-time staff through coaching and providing frequent feedback to ensure staff follows proper protocols.
- Coordinate lifeguard and instructor rotations, classes, breaks, and to monitor instructors’ lesson plans, worksheets and report cards to ensure they are being completed properly and to update required forms as needed.
- Propose, implement and supervise any special events and rental groups including but not limited to Board of Education programs, in co-ordination with the Aquatics Coordinator.
- Resolve problems and/or conflicts with patrons and/or staff.
- Be knowledgeable of City Programs and have strong public relation skills.
- Conduct all duties of a Lifeguard and Swimming Instructor
- Attend and assist with the organization and running of all Aquatic Staff Training and meetings as scheduled.
EDUCATION/SPECIALIZED TRAINING/SKILLS:
Essential (minimum) Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
Hold and maintain the following valid qualifications:
- Water Safety Instructor – Red Cross Society
- National Lifeguard Services Award
- Standard First Aid and C.P.R. ‘C’ Certification
- Lifesaving Society (LSS) Instructor
- Aquatic Supervisor Training Certification
Asset (preferred) Qualifications:
- Aqua-fitness Instructor Certification (AQX, CALA, WaterArt, YMCA)
- Minimum of 1 advanced leadership qualification (National Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor Trainer, Lifesaving Instructor Trainer) – additional trainer & examiner status would be an asset.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Essential (minimum) Qualifications:
- Two (2) years’ experience instructing and lifeguarding
Asset (preferred) Qualifications:
- Skill and efficiency in the use of computers (Microsoft Office – 10, applications) and related software (LEGEND)
- Supervisory experience in an aquatic environment
